The main question for the workshop will be why nonviolence methods are more powerful than violence in accomplishing social change. We’ll start by contemplating what does the concepts ‘civil disobedience,’ ‘nonviolence’ and ‘pacifism’ mean to us. We’ll be talking about Erica Chenoweth and Maria Stephans study Why Civil Resistance Works and about #BlackLivesMatter, #ClimateAction and #MeeToo -activism around the world.
About the host Timo Virtala (firstname.lastname@example.org, +358 45 784 05574): For fifteen years I have been teaching nonviolence in The Center for Non-Military Cervice in Finland. Based on these lecturers I have written a book called The Power of Nonviolence – Stories of Bravery. It includes 21 examples of the use of the power of nonviolence from Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr to Greta Thunberg and many others.
